These hunts are conducted on private and public land in different units throughout the state. New Mexico Lion Hunts are regulated on a quota system. Each designated area is either open or closed depending on the current harvest number of male and female lions. We are licensed in several different areas and have different private properties and are therefore able to move around and hunt open units. We have a high success rate with the use of dogs. There is also a $500 kill fee for FEMALE lions. This helps promote the lion population as well as extending the open hunt dates.
These are five day hunts chosen from the available dates within the season and the open hunt areas. Hunts may be 1 Hunter to 1 Guide or 1 Hunter to 2 Guides (to increase tracking capabilities).
These hunts are weather dependent and are On-Call hunts. Fresh snow significantly increases the success of the lion hunt. The weather is closely monitored and when a storm is anticipated hunters are called in the order of their received deposit.
